Yuan's method is to remove the valve through the left speaker hole. I have done it this way with no problems. For your 86, you might be able to get the screws out of the valve from beneath without removing the knee bolster. First take out the driver's seat so you can see and reach up under the dash without getting stuck upside down. Look up and find the bottom of the valve. There are two 4mm allen screws (maybe torx)that must be removed. A long ball end allen/torx helps(either a socket with extensions or a long Tee handled wrench). If you can get to them, good, if not, you have to remove the knee bolster(2 10mm bolts behind wheel wells under hood, and a double bolt behind astray).

Before you remove these valve screws, unhook and plug the coolant lines at the firewall under the hood. then unscrew the valve and you can lift it out through the speaker hole. When you put the new one in, it's a good idea to clean the mating surfaces and stick the orings on to the valve with some gasket adhesive so they don't fall off when you're juggleing the valve around. First time the job may take 2-3 hours, but second time a little over and hour. good luck.
