The dumbest 900 question yet?

Not sure if this is ridiculously stupid question or not . . . . I just got an 85 900 for a song, that's in great shape with 172K miles. Its the three door hatchback, base model. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to fold down the rear seat. I can tell there's a catch holding the backrest up, but cannot locate a release latch or handle anywhere. Do I have to fold the seat bottom first? I cant seem to get that to fold up independently. What's the secret?
Also, I have a bad heater control valve. Since it's summer, how about just putting a clamp on the coolant line under the hood that leads into the firewall, to allow using the fan without making heat? Then I can drive the car for now and replace the valve at my leisure.
Or would that make a blockage for the whole system (i.e. does the coolant HAVE to circulate thru the valve / core?)
Thanks in advance for the good advice and replies.
