I assume you are reassembling rather than disassembling. If so, you are approaching the challenge the right way. It sounds like you have the splines engaged on the clutch disk but are bumping into the flywheel or edge of the pilot bearing. You should be able to center the shaft by moving the clutch disc around with the screwdrivers.
It might work better if you have a helper to push on the shaft while you move the disk around. Maybe you have the disk too sloppy between the plate and the flywheel, so the disk falls down as soon as you let go of it with the screwdrivers and try to push the shaft in. It might help to put a couple of more bolts in so the clutch disk only moves when you push on it.
It also takes a whack to pop it in the last 1/2 inch. Maybe you had the center but didn't tap it hard enough. Of course the trick is to whack it only when you have the end centered in the pilot bearing so by don't damage the bearing. One more thing, put a little brake caliper grease on the splines to avoid reverse gear crunch.
