I don't know what year your car is, but my '91 900 (non-turbo) had the same problem - the fan shorted and I lost the A/C. I got a s/hand replacement and was going to get the mechanic to fit it, but when I saw that only 3 torx screws mount it, I thought I'd do it myself. I did not remove the hood (never thought of it) neither did I disconnect the battery as the circuit is only live if the ignition and A/C is on, but I did remove the #6 fuse.

In order to get at the screw at the top towards the center of the radiator, I undid the bolt securing the ignition coil and moved the coil out of the way. The other top screw is easier to get at, but the hose from the Air Mass Meter to the Throttle Body gets in the way of the torx driver, so I just undid the top clamp and pulled the hose out of the way. The bottom screw is a little harder, as you cannot see it as much as 'feel' it, but it was easy enough to do. The electical connection to the fan is a piece of cake as there is only one way to fit it.

Hope this helps - save the $65 for beer!
