When was the last time the brake fluid was flushed from the clutch and calipers? This is always my first step when I experience a change in pedal play. Easy and cheap with a mityvac or other pressure bleeder. Use only Castrol LMA fluid - I've found others gave me master cylinder internal leakage probs (with new m.c. as well).
For what it's worth, I've only had '90's and always thought the pedals to be very hard - esp. the brake.
If you're actually having dis-engagement problems, definetly change the fluid - if that doesn't solve it, it's an inexpensive thing to eliminate. Master cylinder failures are most like your earlier description. Slaves generally go all at once.
