While JohnB's advice is right on target, and I am about to do same, if you are determined to fix the stock radio illumination, you can. I did this 7 years ago so exact steps are fuzzy.
First remove the radio using the u-tool or a section of bent coathanger. Then remove the volume knob probably unscrew the top cover. Eventually you will have to carefully (unscrew??? or pry or both) the front cover off to get to the bulbs lighting the buttons. Just dig in and take it apart. There are tiny microbulbs with pigtails that are soldered in. Unsolder on and go to Radio Shack to match the replacement bulbs. Be careful handling the printed circuit and I think there is a "tape" power connector that unplugs. It is a tedious process and you should have a helper when you solder the new bulbs in for extra hands. Once you are done you will have a fair quality radio with lighted buttons. Long climb for a short slide.
