Just to give my similar story, i drive my '86 900S infrequently (~4,000 miles/year) and have replace my resonator (the "muffler" furthest from the tailpipe) about 3 times in 5-6 years. Unfortunately, it was before i knew about this site or the sponsors, so i was spending ~$150 each time to replace it (Meineke). The point it would break was ALWAYS where the pipe enters the flat part of the resonator.
This last time they didn't have the part in stock, so they offered me a "resonator eliminator" which i later find out is just a custom contoured pipe (surprise, it was only about $15 cheaper... rip off!!) but i figure it should last longer since the weak spot where it traditionally broke is not present, as it's now just a pipe.
Hopefully it lasts, and i don't really notice any change in sound or performance.
