Hi,
I just wondered if anyone of the well-experienced SAABers here could help me. I noticed today that the dash H2O temperature guage sending unit on my '84 900S 5-spd. is a bit loose. Well, it's screwed into the t-stat housing tight, but the inner part rotates....
It doesn't leak coolant; however, it's center black part and flat metal circular endpiece, which sender wire connect to, rotate free of the body of the sender. Is this normal? Or is this a reason I've been getting higher temp readings than normal? I wonder if I need to replace the thing because I don't want it to rupture and blow coolant all out of the system.
Since I got the car in November 2001, I have flushed cooling system, replaced coolant mix (M-Benz type now), t-stat (82°C type), thermo fan switch (82°C type), and leaky heater valve (and other, but non-cooling sys. related stuff). Also, Tom Townsend of Townsend Imports did away with the 'run-on' radiator fan time-delay relay for me, wiring fans straight to fan switch on the radiator. The radiator is original, as is the coolant bottle and cap, as far as I know. My guess is cap is leaky, as evidenced by some whitish, dried coolant on underside flat bottom part of cap and the seam on the coolant reservoir.
NOTE: The car had been operating JUST FINE with this maintenance, all winter & spring. It ran just fine, at least until the cool, spring-like days (that had been hanging around here in North Carolina unseasonably late) went bye-bye in early-mid June. Since we've been getting normal hot weather (for NC, anyway, 85-95°F), the car has been running at 1/2-3/5 green at coolest (during nighttime) and 3/5 to 4/5 green, depending on engine load and road speed, during the day. What gives?
If anyone can shed light on this, I'd be very thankful.
Thanks,
Micah in NC
