When you start the car, the water vapor byproduct of combustion condenses until the car warms up to cook it all off. This condensation settles in the exhaust and is what eventually causes exhaust systems to rust out. During the warm up the condensate also drips through the ungasketed surfaces of the turbo (drips down onto the frame and ground). Eventually it all burns off. When you first start the car, the exhaust is often whitish from the condensate burning off. My guess is that these short start'n idle treatments it was given allowed the condensate to build up and not burn off. So you have 6 starts worth of water in the exhaust to burn off. Thus the white smoke. I think your mechanic is correct.
