Replacing the entire harness is probably not cost effective. While the wiring harness in the '85 can look like a mess when you open it up, it's usually only a few wires that have crumbling insulation. Replacement of the defective wires is a reasonable DIY job. It just takes a little time.

As for the wires above the heat shield, the best bet is to open the entire thing up and splice in sections of new wire where needed.

Replacing the injectors is quick and easy, figure an hour max plus parts, a couple hundred bucks. So what were you supposed to be getting for the rest of that $1500? That's an awful lot of wiring.

Based on your comments, I don't have much confidence in the mechanic working on your car. Sounds like he fixed what he thought was wrong and still found that the car wouldn't run. Everything you've described can be done yourself w/ relatively little experience and a modest investment in tools. The Bentley manual is a great value and you'll find folks on this BB that can provide good advice. If you don't want to DIY, find someone else with more experience w/ Saabs. Any competent Saab mechanic would know about the '85 wiring harness problem and how to deal with it.

Your friends are right, you're wasting your money by putting in high-octane gas, regardless of the brand. The car runs just fine on regular gas, that's what it was designed for.
