I also own an 88 900S 3-door, and found the sound from the rear 4x10s to be far less than adequate. Yes, you can buy the adapters to fit a 6x9 speaker in the stock rear speaker areas, but I think it takes a little fiddling with (i.e. cutting metal, shaping, bending, swearing, etc) to get it to fit. I opted to install a pair of 6 3/4" component speakers in the rear armrest area of my car, and the sound is a LOT better. The semi-enclosed area of that rear panel creates much better sound then the free-air application of the stock rear speaker locations. Another route you can go if you are looking for excellent sound quality is to either build yourself (I can let you know how if you want), or have built for you, a set of custom kick panels that would house a high quality set of component speakers up front. With those and a good quality 10" or 12" sub in the trunk you would have an excellent sound system, even without rear speakers. Anyways, good luck!
