what is the letter immediately before that string of numbers. 89 is a "K". 1981 is a "B" 1996 is a "T" they are 1 letter increments for all other years between. if it has an "A" before that number it came out of an automatic. if it has an "M" then it is a manual adaptation.

entire number would look like something like B 20 1 2 I 0 1 M K 000001 where B is gas engine, 20 is swept volume in DL, 1(if single cam)or 2(if dual cam), 2(version adaption)or(2=Saab 900)the next one would be an "I" if injected, a "S" if injected and turbo charged, or a "L" if injected, turbo'd and intercooled...then the 0 (zero) would be for "without knock sensor" and a 1 would be "with knock sensor" the next one is emission control level, then it would be an "A" for auto engine or "M" for manual tranny engine, then the year which in this case would be a 1989, the last numbers are the serial number
