If you hear the whine, the bearing has already failed, what you're doing now by continuing to drive it is extend the damage to other parts of the transmission. As things stand now your transmission is probably rebuildable or will serve as a core on an exchange for a rebuilt. If you drive it further, it will probably be neither and you'll just increase what you'll have to pay to get it fixed.
The usual recommendation on hearing the pinion bearing whine is to stop driving immediately and get it fixed. There is absolutely nothing you can do to reverse the damage done to the bearing and no magic elixor/special lube to extend the life of an already seriously compromised transmission.
