Engine or valve noise

My '86 SPG project car had not been run for a year or more prior to me buying it. I've probably only driven it five miles since getting it running. The compression is good 140 - 150 on all four. There's no smoke etc. coming out the pipe. The engine is noisey!! How do I check if it's valve noise or a rod knocking? I read one post that said after a 16v has sat for awhile the only way to make the valves quiet down it to take her out and run push her hard. I really don't want to walk home if it's a rod knocking.
