Before I begin, thanks to all the advice, direct and indirect, I've received off this board. Absolutely fantastic, priceless info for a continual learner. I hope to reciprocate with confidence one day....now onto my question, dear reader.
'89 SAAB 900s with 188k
Over the past few months I've undertaken more and more repairs on the beauty for lack of money and abundance of time (AOL Keyword : "Telecom Fallout" for more details).
With this time, I've replaced the passenger-side inner driver, outer CV joint, universal bearing and wheel bearing. Still, I'm haunted by noise. A few hours ago I decided I'd better give the driver side front assembly a good look-see. It's not pretty sight. The outer CV boot is cut in half, taking on the contents of many a dirt road, welcome Mr. Grind. The ball joints ain't looking so hot either and, though maybe not the originals, the bushings are cracked leading me to believe it may be best to replace them as well. I have no idea what the inner driver will look like but I haven't had any wobble, so that might be OK for a while. And, of course, those are probably the original shocks.
Now, I have a good CV joint for the replacement and it looks like about $100 in parts will take care of the shock and the ball joints. Not a big monetary investment. I've had plenty of advise from friends and family to let my SAAB die...get another car, but after 5 years and 70k miles, the elft side of my brain is feeling a bit attached to KeemoSAAB-e. The right side of my brain is trying to tally up the future expenses in time, money and frustration. Other facts:
* Headliner needs replacement
* Persitant oil leak
* Need new belts
* AC doesn't work
* Needs new rear brake caliper to get that reverse clink taken care of
* Interior could use a good shampoo
* Slight rust hole over right front fender
* How long will the engine and transmission hold out? SAAB only knows...
And so, my friend, it's a judgement call. Above are the knowns. As time goes on and the miles stack up there is no way to know what other things will need attention. She's no convertible. She's not a turbo. she doens't have a cool-ass CD/MP3 player or flames on the side to those neon lights that thump with a sound system or an ejection seat, bullet-proof glass, missle launcher, machine guns, bubble maker, fog machine or a horn that plays 'Dixie.' Before I make my decision, I'd appreciate your relection...
Thanks
DC Phil
