I bought a retrofit kit from Pep Boys for $30. It included 9 oz oil, a hose, a can tap, and 134a schrader valve stem attachments. I ordered a new receiver dryer and expansion valve.
I found a shop that agreed to evacuate the system. I installed the parts as per Monsters directions and took it back to the A/C shop for a long vac. I went home and charged it up. Its great. Its cold. It cost me $120 total.
The guy at the A/C shop said that a new receiver dryer is not necessary. He said that back in the early days of 134a all manufacturers recomended that all rubber fittings and the receiver dryer be replaced as part of the conversion process. However, the conventional wisdom among A/C guys is that a long enough evac. will do the trick, as 134a oil is compatable with trace amounts of R12.
That being said, I still put in a new receiver dryer.
