Scott,
Since yours is an 8V, I might be able to help. If you can, determine if engine is getting both fuel and spark.
Remove a spark plug boot(any one), take out a plug, stick it back in boot, lean it's curved outer electrode on something metal on engine to ground it (as it is when inserted in plug hole. [DON'T HOLD the spark plug or any plug wire while cranking the engine!] Now crank the engine, having someone watch for bright, blue spark. If spark is present, then you have a fuel supply problem. If no spark, then the ignition is your problem. Be careful around the fragile aging fuel injector lines, as leaning on them can break them--don't ask me how I know that!.
It could be a bad fuel pump relay (located in fusebox underhood, driver's side). If you have a Haynes manual or Bentley (publishing Co.) 8V SAAB manual, you can find a diagram of what terminals to jumper after taking out fuel pump relay to see if fuel pump then operates or not. [Photo below is of fusebox location on my '84 900S, driver's side view; yours should look same.] Sorry, I don't have photo of interior of fusebox, yet.
Also, your 8V has 2 fuel pumps: a main pump and a feeder (pre-pump). One or the other may be bad, and they can die suddenly, especially if they've been noisy for a while or if fuel filter changing has been neglected for a long time. The pre-pump can go bad and will cuase no starts below about 1/4 tank (because main pump doesn't sit off bottom and can't get any fuel when tank is 1/4 or lower with non-working feeder/pre-pump).
Another possibility is (don't get angry) that you're out of gas. Older SAAB gas guages can be a bit funky sometimes, so don't overlook that.
Check connector on side of distributor, too. Sometimes the little 90° socket the connector plugs into can crack, causing no start (no ignition, which disables fuel pump as well, they're interconnected).
Hope this helps!
