Larry,
Not to burst your bubble here, but your '88 S isn't gonna win many land speed records (I know, I have a n/a myself, albeit an '84 8V 900S, which is even slower. But, hey, they're fun cars!). If I'm remembering correctly, you have about 128 horsepower (when new, at sea level) and my '84 had 110hp new.
First, congratulations are in order! You just took posession of the first year 900S with LH 2.4, which is capable of self-diagnosis through the Check Engine light--well, to some extent. More about that below.
I haven't done any of this to mine, but I hear that a lighter weight flywheel, bigger throttle body & throttle valve, new camshafts, and maybe larger capacity fuel injectors and K&N air filter can increase performance on non-turbos like yours and mine. But mine is still stock, engine-wise. You might search the performance board or post there if you're bent on sqeezing more from the 16V naturally aspirated (non-turbo) powerplant you've got.
You said that the prev. owner took good care of it. That notwithstanding, I would check the usual stuff: ignition wires for age cracks when bent around a finger (or arcing,too--check for this at night/in dark while engine running); check spark plugs, replace if gap is too wide; check fuel injector rail for any visible fuel seepage/leaks; check air filter; check brakes for wear--probably have to pull the wheels to do this any justice;
If Check Engine light comes on, you may want to see if there are any stored codes in the LH-Jetronic computer. To do this, follow the link below to my old post on the subject. It, in turn, has links to procedures.
I hope this helps!
