Check the AIC valve, mounted just above the thermostat housing next to the end of the fuel rail. This valve should be closed when cold, and open when hot, allowing a 'choke' of air to the engine when cold. It is probably not closing completely when cold, and thus the engine won't idle at all, but is probably opening okay, so when the engine warms up, everything is fine.
This is common. I've removed them and cleaned them with 3M intake cleaner with good results. See other posts on AIC for more information.
