Hi all.
I'm in the middle of trying to get my little brother's '87 900S back on the road. Mostly it needed a new radiator, and that's done.
Unfortunately it will not start using the key... Well, not with a conventional use of the key anyway.
Turning the ignition results only in a loud "click" from the starter solenoid. In my limited experience, this has ALWAYS been an alternator ground issue. Don't ask if you don't know what I mean. Anyway, I completely overhauled the alternator ground, I removed the frontmost alternator mounting bolt, cleaned it up, (I did not clean the threads in the block...) renewed the ground strap with a piece of SOLID 10 gauge wire and connected to the proper terminal on the alternator. Absolutely no change whatsoever. It is worth noting that I just restored a '87 900s, just two days ago, by performing exactly the same fix.
If I bridge the two positive terminals on the starter, the starter spins but does not engage the flywheel.
If I turn the key, the starter does not turn, but the solenoid does click.
If I have a helper turn the key, and I then bridge the two positive terminals on the starter, the engine will start and run. The starter engages, turns, and starts the engine. No problem.
So. Assuming that I did the ground renewal correctly, and I cannot say anything other than what I have said, and If this is an issue with dirty female threads on the block it could be the problem:
Is this simply a starter solenoid problem? Are solenoids available? Are they only available with a starter? Can someone tell me what the deal is here?
I have had 5 900's from '83 to '87 and never once lost a starter or starter solenoid, so I'm a little surprised. I have also had the 'click' manifest several times, and cleaning the alternator ground has always been the solution. Not this time, apparently, unless as I say there is some corrosion in the block threads that I did not take care of.
I appreciate any advice, thank you very much for any responses.
