There should be 3 wires connected to the rear of the alternator:
1. Big thick red wire connected to starter going to fat nut on the back of the alt.
2. Charging circuit wire small grn/wht wire going into harness which connects to charging/battery indicator light on dashboard connected to smaller nut next to big fat nut mentioned in #1. (these sometimes break off and "disappear / dangle around" amongst the muck and grease.) The battery will not charge properly if this disconnected. Make sure the light bulb in the dash is good too, proper charging requires this bulb to be good (should be 2 watt bulb, and illuminate when you turn the ignition key.)
3. Alternator ground cable connected between engine block and alternator chassis. These break off too, and cause lots of headaches if disconnected. This is usually a 10 or 12 gauge wire.
