I bought an 86 5KT (10 valve 5-cyl turbo) a few years ago and harvested the whole engine, wiring harness, and other bits. I paid $500 for the whole car (steering rack and brake booster were shot and the clutch was slipping badly...) I was going to swap motors initially, but have decided to just swap the head, intake and exhaust bits to boost the 4KQ. It's funny, but I'm planning on using the APC system from a junker 900 T to detect knock and control the boost and do the usual tweaks to the APC for more power. I'll just swap in the APC, pressure transducer, knock sensor, and soleniod along with some custom wiring. A friend of mine has had sucess doing this to his BMW 635.
While there is nothing easier than tweaking the pots on the APC with a screwdriver, the old Audi turbos could be tweaked using stiffer waste gate springs and chips. The problem was that these cars still used the CIS injection in the mid 80s (unlike SAAB), so it is a bit harder to get more fuel/boost out of the motor at the higher end....
Some Audi guys like the QSW. Not the best looking car Audi make IMHO..:)
