Alternator bushings!

Well I got the stupid things in.... all the posts I've read here and townsend and twinsaabs really helped with getting everything out. But from what I've read the new bushings should go in really easy. They don't!
First I sprayed them with WD-40 and pushed them in, all but the last 1/4 inch. Then try what I might (hammer + socket, trying to pull them in with a bolt, praying for divine intervention, etc) I just couldn't get them in all the way.
I ended up heating up the bracket in my oven to 250F and using some rubber gease on the bushings. I then managed to get them in about as far as the first time! Ugg! After that I used a pair of waterpipe pliers and went around the circumference of the bushings and little by little they went in... they don't look too happy though, with the metal insert sunk lower than the rubber.
Has anybody else had trouble inserting these things? The ones I have are rubber, not poly... anyways... tomorrow new coolant and hopefully she'll run again!
