Easiest way to replace rear side "popout" window latch? Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
The metal latch on my rear side window suffered a "fatigue" failure, and I've been trying to figure out how to replace it. I've got a few extra windows hanging around, and recently tried to swap out the metal frame which goes 3/4 of the way around the glass. Unfortunately, the little hex bolts on the top and bottom seem to be made from very soft metal which stripped with very little effort.
Do I need to remove the interior B-pillar trim and the little black wind deflector on the leading edge of the window, and swap out the entire window unit? I usually end up butchering any job requiring rivets- probably the cheap-ass rivet gun I picked up at the hardware store.
I also tried to punch out the little pieces of curled metal which form the hinge pins, but couldn't imaging replacing them intact and functional.
Anyone care to dispense some advice, hints, anecdotes, or verbal abuse?
