$275 sounds reasonable - prob. $140-$150 for rebuilt alt. and 2 hours labor. I have just recently been through a similar experience except for the fact that I was doing the work myself (you can see my previous posts expressing anger, doubt, and frustration regarding this very subject). If I had to do this all over again, quite simply, I would not. The only reason I started tackling it myself, was that all the shops that I trust were booked up.
Things as they stand now: the car runs, but if it gives me any further grief I'll bring it down to the Saab dealership (yes the Saab dealership). My reasoning is quite simple: They stated we don't charge to diagnose the problem- only labor to replace defective parts. OK, maybe they'll use a gazillion different parts, but it still has to be cheaper than the tow trucks, the gazillion different parts I've used, and all the grief and frustration I've dealt with. Electrical problems can be the most difficult to solve. So unless you're really patient and willing to work on it yourself methodically, I would bring it to a Saab expert (dealership or otherwise, and don't trust the first mechanic that the car breaks down in front of).
