How to use Pickle fork Correctly???

Ok, so I have been working on several of my friends' cars this summer and I still don't get the idea behind the pickle fork that splits ball joints.
The way I use it is to put it between the joint and hammer away. As brute as this is, it usually works and splits the joint. At the same time the Ball Joint boot gets ruined or atleast looses a good amount of grease.
Am I doing something wrong or is investing in a ball joint puller/lifter a better idea than using this fork deal??
What do the more experienced guys think??
BTW, ruining those boots is a major pain in the ass because they are seldom abailable seperatly at local auto stores.
