Will,

I sent this to another Saabnet member awhile ago after I did my heat shield repair. Hope it helps. All screws for the heat shield can be reused if they aren't tooooo rusty. Also get a Bentley manual if you plan to do a lot of DIYs

Jeff

I have a convertible '91 900s, so I don't know if it's exactly the same,
but...

You need to remove the center console; this is two screws under the rear
ashtray, and two little screws under the gearshift boot. Remove the storage
bin console. To do this, remove the ashtray (four little screws + 1 threaded
stud), two screws under the bellows in front of the gearshift and pull at
the top of the console to free it from the lip formed by the knee bolster.
Also remove driver's seat (don't forget to unplug the seat heater wires!),
and remove the sills on both side of the car (at carpet edges). Remove
whatever is necessary to pull up the carpet in front of the rear seat. On my
convertible, you just have to pull the rear seat lower cushion off, it's just
a snap on, but I think all earlier cars use bolts from the underside.

There are three screws holding the heat shield on from the inside of the
car, and two from under the car. I assume you have the exhaust off. If
not, disconnect at the exhaust manifold, and gently drop the exhaust. You
should probably replace the gaskets at this joint if you do this. Some also
recommend replacing the nuts. Now's a good time to replace the exhaust from
the cat back too. (I installed a Starla kit from eeuroparts.com)

Pull the carpet up in front of the rear seat, exposing the metal shield that
covers the wires behind the center console. This has three torx socket
screws; the two rear screws thread into the heat shield, so remove them.
Then pull up the carpet that is in front of where the center console
normally resides. This exposes a plastic sleeve that holds the main wire
harness. There is also a bag of fibreglass insulation material. Pull this
up on the driver side only. I ripped the plastic material because it was
stuck down, but that's probably unavoidable. I think there may be a clip,
or screw, that holds the harness sleeve that needs to be removed, but I
can't remember. Feel around for the head of a screw that is holding the
front of the heat-shield on. If you are looking from underside the car, you
will get an idea where this screw is located, and then you can feel for it
on the inside. It's located in a little recess, that's the best way I can
describe it. Once you find it, remove it. Then remove the two screws that
hold the heat shield on from the underside of the car, and voila, off comes
the heat shield. "Installation is the reverse of removal" as they say :-).

When I was asking on Saabnet some people told me that removing the front
screw was too annoying to be worthwhile. It is true that you have to take a
lot of stuff apart ot get to it. Their suggestion was to just cut off that
screw from the underside to get off the heatshield, and then weld a nut on
to the underside of the body. Then a machine screw could be used from the
underside to hold on the front of the heat-shield. Being a perfectionist in
my car repairs, and lack of any welding equipment precluded that option,
however!

At any rate good luck, and feel free to contact me if you encounter any
difficulties.

Jeff
