You will have to probably unsolder at least one connection to check all 6 diodes. What it is is a 3 phase bridge rectifier. Check that each diode allows current flow in one direction and not in the other. Continuity check will work with a volt meter. Open one way and short the other. If you DO have a bad diode, it would be best to collect a used alternator as I do not think it is a common problem. Before I put it in, I would check teh brushes and diodes jsut to be sure you ahve a good one. Also you may need to make a new ground strap to the block. Make sure this is a good connection. To check the connection, you may be able to put the positive test lead on the alternator stud then check the alt case. You should have 13-15 volts. Check to the block and then to the batetry negative terminal. If you find that the block is less, you need a better alt gnd strap. If it drops to the battery, you need a better battery negative cable. Once these are in order, then check the positive cable teh same way, but use the battery negative as the reference. good luck.
