I could recommend a bunch of repair options and swap for used (call your local shop- they probably have 8-10 laying around), but my best adivce is to swap the OEM for new. I was "hoping not replace" also. I dicked around with repair and some other things for a while- even silence for TOO long. I saw the light and never looked back (yeah- thanks to the BB).
In the long run- if you want to keep the car- buy an after factory head/CD and post here to install- it's really not hard and I'm sure you can find a closet audiofile friend to help (like I did). KEEP THE OLD system- it's not worth selling and if you total the car- something has to go back in those slots (and no, they don't care if it's wired to work) when the bank calls (if you owe?).
Of note- plan your system up front. I good head/CD with plenty of pre-outs might seems like a lot of $$ at first, but you have the flexibility to expand later and the resale will be a bit better (in the event you sell it).
Of caution- Once I got started with a new head unit- I realize the limitations of the stock speakers, then realize the limitations of the new speakers with just a head pushing them. A lot of $$ and time later- I'm poor(er), but I enjoy my music (and NPR) much more and learned a ton a long the way.
I wish you the best and I'm sure you'll get mucho adivce here on the audio front.
