u can't predict if a gasket is going to go south but, as Todd notes, an overheating incident doesn't bode well. the head is aluminum and, when too hot, warps, which compromises the gasket's integrity. about the best thing u can do is look in the coolant reservoir - if it has oil in it, it's got a bad gasket. if the dipstick has some milky stuff on it, that's another clue.

the below link goes to a Saabnet archive. there are some interesting points made - take the time to read *all* the responses.

if u are on the hunt for a good used SAAB, about the best assurance u can get that it will treat u right is to purchase it from someone who has maintained it religiously, and has the records to show for it. also, a 'buyer's inspection' by a SAAB technician (not your Honda or Chevy mech., but a SAAB *specialist*).

the key to these cars is like living a healthy lifestyle: eat well, exercise a lot, and take good care of yourself and your chances for a longer life are greatly increased.
