My '88 900 (NA 8v, automatic) is a regular heater. The temperature gauge will run high at times but never overheat.
Two weeks ago, I backflushed the coolant. Apparently I damaged one of the ATF cooling lines, because it leaked readily after that. After changing that, I just noticed a new problem. On the outside of the coolant reservoir, where the normal crusties deposited when I overfilled the coolant and it spit up, a reddish tinge has appeared. I can only assume the ATF heat exchanger in the lower radiator hose is leaking ATF into the coolant supply and coolant into the ATF. Am I right?
I'm going to fix the heat exchanger on monday, have the transmission flushed on tuesday, and drive a couple hundred miles on wednesday. Any hints, experience, or horrors?
