I've successfully converted my previous R12 to R134a some months ago. I followed the recommended proceedure of flushing the entire system of the old oil and drying the system out prior to drawing a vacuum. The R12 oil is not compatible with R134a. I removed and flushed each component (accept the reciever/drier) with mineral spirits, then blew compressed air through each component. Then when assembled, I rigged a shop-vac hose to an open hose and drew warm dry air through the system for a good 30 minutes, removing both moisture as well as the remnant mineral spirits fumes. Then the vacuum and final installation of R134 oil and refrigerant. I also put in a used compressor, it too flushed of the old oil. The system has worked fine since. Nice and cool, despite the 100+ temps we've had of late.
