John, I just got an '85 turbo auto, and I love it. It is my 4th classic 900, and all the other ones were stick shift. Every one with the stick shift blew the pinion bearing (even the one with the supposedly idestructable 4 speed). One of those was also a turbo (an '87), so I can compare between the auto and the stick with firsthand experience.
I would say that the auto is much better than the stick shift, by far. First of all, it is much easier to drive, since the stick shifts aren't really all that fun anyway on our cars. Secondly, the turbo boost doesn't drop every time it shifts gears like it does with a manual, which realy makes it much smoother. And also, if you floor the automatic, it won't upshift untill redline, so you can really use all of the gears when you are getting on it.
So I would say that, in my opinion, the auto is a much better choice for a classic Saab 900 turbo. If it was a rear-wheel drive sports car, then yes I would say a manual is the better choice. But for this car, the auto is the way to go.
