On mine it was brake rotors that were not perfectly straight. The warped rotor pushes the brake caliper back & forth, rattling the pads. When you apply the brakes, it still moves back & forth, but doesn't rattle because the pads are being squeezed. Apparently, your mechanic also cleaned out the crud from where the pads are mounted in the caliper (good for him). That crud was probably muffling the noise.
Take the rotors off, clean up all the surfaces where they mount to the hub, put the rotors back on. Don't overtighten the wheel bolts. If you're lucky(!) they will be a little more straight. Otherwise, new rotors. I just lived with the noise till the rotors wore out.
