Really need to go thru the tune up items.
New spark plugs, dist. cap and rotor.
How old are plug wires?
How old is oxygen sensor? Not likely the root of your probs but still a potential culprit.
How old is fuel filter? Can cause hesitation/sluggishness on high demand.
Go over all vacuum lines to look for leaks. Essential and tricky cuz they are often not obvious.
Clean throddle butterfly and AIC with carb cleaner.
Regarding the stall on start, if its a hot car restart (10-30 minutes after shutdown) you could have a leaky injector or fuel pressure regulator. Run some Techron in the next tank of gas and also pull off the vac hose on the FPR to see if there is any fuel in it.
I'm sure I'm omitting something in my rush. Others will add. Also search "tune up" for a ton of insight.
Good luck in the Twin Cities. Which school?
