I found that the spring tension had lost some pull. Behind the mirror is a T-shaped spring bracket with two springs. I found that you need to take this out, straighten in a vise, re-install. The springs always seem fine.
To get to the T-shaped spring bracket, remove the mirror/glass. Look on the underside of the mirror for the bigger hole. Stick a small flat blade screw driver in there and unscrew the boss holding the mirror in the assembly. Its like opening a jar of pickles which is in a sealed box and your only access is a small hole in the side of the box. You may have to push the bottom edge of the mirror in all the way or out, I forget, to see the teeth.
Once thats off, you'll need to get the motor bracket assembly out. Take the four screws out and let it dangle. Under that is the spring frame/backbone. Its held in with screws, some are plastic melt rivets. If its melted in place, take a drill bit bigger than 1/4" to drill out the rivets. To replace you'll have to get some self tapping truss head or low head screws, and drill a small starter hole.
Once that's loose you pull it away from the car to get its tabs loose from the side. Remove that pin holding it all together. In you hand you will have a sheet metal frame, two springs, and a T-shaped spring braket.
Straighten out the spring bracket and you're in business. This helps to tighten up the spring tension holding the mirror to the car.
You can remove the whole mirror like DougM says, but you'll still end up tearing into the guts. There was no screw to tighten things up on my M85 and M86 900t.
Alternatives:
1) RTV the mirror/frame together
2) fill the gap with door weather stripping
Good luck,
Ed S
