Eric,
I hope this link can point you in the right direction. It is to Larry West's Saab '86 900T page. He describes, in detail, how he replaced the fuel (pre-)pump and where it is, how to get it out, etc. Very good webpage.
Yep, your car (and mine, and Larry's) has two fuel pumps, which the book may not have told you: one is the main pump, supplying the bulk of the fuel pressure; the other is a pre-pump (a.k.a. "feeder pump") which supplies fuel from the lower part of the fuel tank to the little "basket" which the main pump sits in.
Pre-pumps go bad, causing sputtering, an "air sucking" sound from the fuel tank/trunk area, and/or stalls-and-won't-start-back until fill the tank back up above 1/4 tank or so. This is because main pump sits too high in its "basket" to reach much lower than the 1/4 tank level, therefore it starves for fuel (which could cause IT to fail prematurely, in turn!)
Bad main pumps can be heard to whine at a high-pitch or, of course, do nothing. They may not get enough (or any) fuel to the engine, causing a no-run condition. Main fuel pumps can die due to high mileage/old age and/or neglected fuel filter changes (causing fuel system to have too much back pressure, putting a strain on the main pump).
If you're experiencing running problems, try replacing the fuel filter first, to see if pump noise changes in pitch. If so, then filter may have been the culprit and main pump may have some life left in it!
I'll put the link to Larry's page below. Hope this helps!

(wish I'd seen Larry's page before I did my first fuel pump on a 900!)
