Trany question's - Compatibility and other stuff

I am doing a rebuild on a 1993 900s. I have an 89 trany that is in ok shape only damage is the cup that the axel fits into and connects to the tranny. I have a 1993 with a bad gear cluster as well as a bad 4th gear. It also needs some syncros replaced. From what I understand the 93 is a better tranny. I asked several people if the gear cluster was the same. I got conflicting answers. I counted the teeth and found out that one of them has more teeth than the other. Basically I guess it is not compatible. If you were I and you had 2 trannys taken apart on your work bench what would you do? Call a Taxi? Ok seriously. Should I try to get a new gear cluster ($950 at local dealer or $650 via Saab sponsors) or should I use the 89 tranny and swap out the cups on the drive shaft/differential.
Is it possible to find a used Gear cluster? Where could you find something like that that is used? What I really like about the 1993 is that the shifter springs into the middle. My dad always has trouble finding 3rd and 4th. With the springed tranny it goes right in. Any ideas? Is it worth the extra $600 to have a 1993 tranny over an 89? Any other compatibility issues I should know about? I have a perfect reverse gear out of the 89 but the 93 is chewed.
Thanks
Adam
