93 900 T -Mushy shifter - can't get into reverse or 5th

So I've had my 93 900T for about 4 months now - before that it was an 89 900T. Both always had the reverse gear pop-out problem, so I've just been really gentle with the reverse. Last night, as I go to pull out of my parking space, I suddenly can't select reverse, or 5th! No warning whatsoever in the days before. The shifter doesn't slot into the 5th or reverse slots, and the other 4 gears are now all difficult to select - the shifter is really mushy. I can drive in 1st-4th and I get no odd noises from the tranny or clutch, but just can't get into 5th or reverse. Even tried keeping the clutch out to see if I could get to the start of the engage, but no go. Anyone have any ideas? I'm hoping I'm not in for a major repair here. On another note, the car was towed once, about 6 weeks ago. I'm not familiar with how the tow guys get the car out of reverse without the key...could it be related?
Thanks for any help guys.
