Cruising one late night in my new '85 SAAB 900 (with about 2500 miles on it) after going out and having a few drinks (non alcoholic). I decided to head back to Luke AFB (Phoenix) and call it a night (about 2:30 A.M.). It was a nice night so I decided to take the long way home by circling the base and heading in the direction of the White Tanks mountains located behind the base. I came to a stop sign and noticed an abandoned Ford LTD sitting there on the shoulder and thought nothing of it. However when I was beside it and looked inside it, I saw what appeared to be about five or six guys appear out of nowhere and the headlights came on and the car headed straight for my car with the intention on ramming me. Wasting no time I stepped on it and barely avoided it... the chase was on. The 900 isn't one of the fastest cars in the world, but it sure seemed like it had a turbo because I inched away from that behemoth which was probably about 6 inches from my rear bumper hell bent on ramming me. Little did I know what was about to happen next. It was a setup, a trap. Further down the road was another stop sign and we were already doing about 95 MPH and I wasn't about to stop! There was a huge dip on both sides of the intersecting road! I hit the first dip at almost 100 and heard a big boom at impact! The first thing I thought was there goes my oil sump... my motor oil is al over the road. Believe it or not, my entire car was airborne! What goes up, must come down... BOOM! I reached the other side of the road and I knew for sure that my sump was toast. I still had no intentions of stopping so my foot was planted on the floor with the gas pedal under it. looking back in the rear view mirror, the Ford had slowed expecting me to stop further up with major problems, but to my surprise, I didn't get an oil light, and even if I did, I wasn't stopping until the engine died. To make a long story short, I made it back to the base, but I was shaking like a leaf. I was too shook up to report this to the police. I found out later that there were a couple of unresolved murders/disappearances out in that area! It's a huge area. I checked over the SAAB the next day and the only damage I found was the two metal 'beams' under the front of the car were flattened, saving the gearbox/sump. I shudder when I think about what would've happened if my sump would've been damaged.
