unless the 1988 900 is a base model (last year of 8-valve engine), which would be same as the '84 900's powerplant.
Brakes are different because 1988 marked first year of emergency brakes and rear wheels (vs. front e-brakes prior to that, all the way back to '79). So, calipers would be different between the two.
The console's interior light switch is not the same, either, nor the overhead light. (On, off, door position switch was eliminated from the light assembly itself and was incorporated into the new, 3-position switch for the 1987 model year.) Headlights and taillights changed at '87 model year, so the '88 has different lights than the '84, too.
'88 probably has the newer type heated seat (3-wire plug) on driver's side and a dash controller (off & 3-settings: 0,1,2,3). '84 seat was simply temp controlled by internal thermostat, not dash controls. SEATS WILL FIT if swapped between the two, but wiring will have to have some creative thinking applied to get the heated seat function to work.
If the 1988 has the 16V engine (S or Turbo only) the transmission may not have the same gear ratios as the '84, at best, and may not even bolt up to the '84 motor (not sure about that, though).
Switches (like A/C, hazard blinkers, recirculate, rr. defrost) won't interchange, either: '88 has newer type "touch on/off" switches, not like the '84 (and up through '87, I think) "click on/off" type, which required a heftier shove to activate.
Wheels are different, too: 1988-on 900 cars have newer 4 lug pattern plus locating stud on axle hub. '84 wheels definitely won't fit on '88 900. I don't think '88 wheels will fit an '84, either, but not sure there.
But parts like doors, windshield, steering wheel, center console cubby, headliner, shift lever, and body panels would interchange.
I've racked my brain, and that's all I can come up with. I hope others can help flesh out the details better.
Hope this helps!
