A/C Compressor, '88 and '90 interchange? Posted by vsfoxe [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I'm considering buying a '90 SPG, but it has no A/C (for a few years!), as the belt has been removed. So I'd guess the necessary repair(s) to the system were expensive - hence "remove the belt".
I failed to see which compressor the '90 had, But:
(1) Did '90 SPG have R12 Freon (I think so?)
(2) I have a good '88 compressor (Seiko Seiki, P/N 94 81 979) with hoses attached to it. Should that compressor theoretically be usable on a '90 system? Or did '90 use a different compressor?
(3) What parts (other than compressor) are expensive, and difficult to change in A/C system (I would certainly change the Receiver/Dryer unit). The owner of the '90 has no idea why the A/C was dead.
(4) I'm a DIYer, but NOT on air conditioning. Is $500-$600 enough to budget in for a guesstimate, or too low? Rest of car is very good, all switches & controls work.
(5) Should I plan on converting to R134 Freon, with a kit? Even if the old system has has R12 in it?
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.
