All Saab 16vT motors are essentially compatible. To swap an '88 into your '85, you'll likely need to move the engine mount brackets from your motor onto the newer one. Everything else is a straight bolt-up.
In terms of differences, you can look for:
o '88 has a water-cooled Garrett T3 vs. your non-cooled T3. You can use your turbo on the later motor by plugging the water feed line, or use the water-cooled turbo in your car by swapping the lower radiator hose. Since you'll have the engines out anyway, I'd strongly recommend going with the aater cooled unit and replacing your hose - you'll wanna do that anyway, and there's no better time than whent he motor is out.
o Head, cams, and intake manifold will all be different on the '88. It was a change for improved emissions and not *necessarily* improved performance. Your call what you do about it. IMHO, bet performance option is probably to use the '85 cams on the '88 motor. The '88 head *may* have internal oil passages or may have external ones depending on when in '88 it was cast. The external feeds are a PITA maintenance items, but the internal ones are a PITA to bleed if it becomes necessary. I'd opt for the later one.
o There will be little differences - the '88 will have a better AIC setup and better ELCD setup. These things will not require any real planning or engineering on your part.
Have fun!
