A few months ago my radio would go dead while playing for a 1/2 second or so, but then resume right away. It's a Saab Clarion OEM from an '86 900S. Unlike most used Saab radios i see advertised today, the front of this one is completely flat, Part# 02 73 045.

The other day it was working fine, then i left the car for 10 minutes or so, when i returned and started the car it wouldn't play at all. The LCD indicating the radio station lights up, the ST is lit up indicating it is receiving a signal in 'stereo', but no sound. All of the LEDs by the volume (and other audio modes like Bass, Treble, Balance, etc) were illuminated and wouldn't respond to the +/- keys. I wiggled things and couldn't get it working again. I tried to put a cassette in to see if it was just the radio portion, but it wouldn't accept a tape (it was as if there was something blocking it from going in).

I made another stop and when i returned from the car this time the radio worked fine.

Today i drove the car again and no sound whatsoever, no LEDs in the Volume, Bass, Trebble, etc area. If i pull the radio out and put it back in, it does NOT ask me to put in the security code or anything like that, it just lights up as if it is working but doesn't play anything. After i parked the car i pulled the radio and put it in again, and you could VERY FAINTLY hear music, but no way of increasing the volume or knowing what the volume was set to (as the indicator doesn't light up).

Is the radio simply fried from 15+ years of use? Any easy fixes or ways to check potential problems?

If i must replace (which i don't have too much extra cash right now), is it interchangable with other year OEM Saab Clarion radios? Should i just try to acquire one on Ebay for cheap? Should i try upgrading to a radio/CD Player combo? If so, should i stick with the OEMs (if a later year is interchangable with mine) or go to an electronics store and get a cheap car CD player?

I know (almost) nothing about car radios, so ANY info you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated (no matter how basic of info it may be).
