To do it.

You are pretty much on the right track with the way you are doing it ( without having the Saab special tool.)

The only difference is that I have the luxuary to have the car up in the air and use solid part of steering rack as a leverage.

Also very important is to find a washer that fit snug on the shifter shaft but is also big enough to press on the outer edge of seal. After the washer you place a socket the fit snug on the shaft. ( which it sounds like you are doing).

If only using a deep socket, the pressure is hitting the seal too far in and can damage the lip or sending the seal sideways into the tranny.

The prybar I'm using is about 4' long ( I call it "my persuador" ) It takes care of a lot of problems.

If you use the right washer and the right size socket, it's almost impossible to send the seal sideways in.
