Knocking sound from gearbox

My 89 turbo is developing a knocking sound that's most noticable when driving slowly in 1st gear, and breaking.
In neutral the sound is also there, but goes away when I press the clutch pedal. It's been like this for a year or so, but seems to very slowly get more pronounced.
Final drive / chain tensioner??
