The Corrado g60 is a supercharged inline 4. It is basically the same 1.8 litre inline 4, 8 valve mill on billions of other VW's, but with some differences - oil squirters on the pistons, lower compression pistons, etc.
g60 engines run Digifant-1 engine management, which was developed by VW in-house. It is a knock sensing, electric fuel injection system.
The designation g60 comes from the supercharger itself. The charger is a g-lader style charger, with 60mm deep scrolls. Hence the name, "g60." The g60 Corrado is the only car to ever use this engine in the US, making it pretty rare. There were some euro-market golfs and passats with the g60 engine, but they never officially came to America. Also, VW made a g40 engine for a short period of time - basically, a smaller version of the g60 engine - a 1.3 litre engine with a 40mm g-lader charger on it.
The g60 Corrado was offered in America from 1990 until mid-1992, when the Corrado SLC took over. The Corrado SLC was one of the first cars to use VW's newest engine, the narrow-angle, 12 valve v6 they call the vr6. The vr6 is still available in many dubs today - it is an excellent engine, in a *very* small package for a v6. I think this is where your confusion is coming from - the Corrado was offered in either g60 form (1.8 litre inline 4, 8 valve, supercharged) or SLC form (2.8 litre narrow angle 12 valve v6.)
Sadly, the SLC stopped coming to the US in 1994, and was discontinued elsewhere in 1995. Thus ended what was, IMHO, one of the coolest cars VW ever built.

(PS - that was all off the top of my head, some of it may be inaccurate.)
