The Saab is an '86 900S.
I did find the barrel type connector that fell into the abiss of the dash (by taking off the left speaker grill). It was so hard to find because i' was looking for the barrel, but the way it came to rest, it was sitting vertically, so when i finally located it after 10 minutes of looking inside the speaker grill location, all i saw was a circle with 12 little holes in it.
To continue the saga, i think it's fried, as the lights around the volume area don't work properly, it doesn't ask for a code when i remove and re-insert, and i have no control over the volume, nor can i change the audio mode from volume to bass, treble, fader, etc.
I think i'm going to eventually try some soldering as mentioned in a post above with the assumption that it'll most like just be for the purpose of practicing soldering. I pretty certain i'm going to have to purchase a new/used cheap unit (Ebay?) and i'll upgrade to a CD player.
I only drive about 5K miles per year, so i'm not in the car that often to spend a lot on a stereo system, but i'd at least like some noise in there for when i'm alone with just my thoughts!
