Valvetrain noise?

Hey all-
Well, I ordered my clutch parts today. Took the center console apart to play with the sunroof switch yesterday. One by one, I'm tracking down the problems my bargain 900 Turbo has!
My next question is about valvetrain noise. I read the recent posts (yesterday and the day before, I think) discussing how there's a pad or something on the timing chain that can cause noise, but I don't think that is the problem in my case.
There's a constant tick-tick-tick noise coming from the head, but it it more from the front end of the engine. (Well, back of the engine I guess - the end that is towards the front of the car, ie not the timing chain end!) Based on my time playing with VW engines while I was away from the Saab world, I'd say it sounded like a dead lifter.
What's a lifter job like on these cars? Is lifter failure a common problem? On 8 valve VW engines, a lifter job is simple - take off the valve cover, remove the cam, pull the lifters out with a magnet, and put the new ones in. Is it that easy on a 16 valve 900? How much do lifters cost for these cars?
Again, because I've never worked on a 16v engine, this may seem like a silly question - but, do you have to do all the lifters, or can you just replace the noisy ones?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I probably won't get to doing anything about this for several weeks (car is off the road and not being driven anyways) but I wanted to start researching it now.
