replacing head.......diy???

my 1989 900T 16v (200,000+ miles) is starting to make a rattle noise at certain rpms in every gear..(it is not the pad in the VC).
My guess is it is somthing with the chain or the valve train. The nearest Saab mechanic is 50 miles away and likes to steel money from nice little saab owners. I have thought about just rolling in a new chain but the thought of leaving all the old guides in bothers me.....I am a diy kinda guy and was wondering if replacing the head(maybe from SD)headgasket, and timing chain is somthing that is posible to tackle? any special tools required? any good sites with info?
I am afraid to ask but how much would somthing like this cost(laybor)??
Things I have done/replaced on my car:
entire axle..cv joints 2 inner drivers
ball joints
tie rod ends
shocks, springs
all front end bushings
complete brake job
injectors, fpr
AMM, o2 sensor
MSD Boost Timing Master
S1 APC
BOV, vaccum hoses
gauges: oil psi, volts, turbo psi, A/F ratio
